Carsten Spohr

Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Deutsche Lufthansa AG

Carsten Spohr was born in Wanne-Eickel, Germany, on December 16, 1966. He has been Chairman of the Executive Board and Chief Executive Officer of Deutsche Lufthansa AG since May 1, 2014. In this role, he is responsible for the Lufthansa Group, which comprises the Passenger Airline Group, Logistics, MRO, Catering and IT Services segments and has around 117,000 employees worldwide.

After earning a degree in industrial engineering at Karlsruhe University, he qualified for a commercial airline pilot’s license from the Lufthansa Flight Training school in Bremen and Phoenix. He subsequently completed a management training course at Deutsche Aerospace AG, Munich.

In October 1994, Carsten Spohr returned to Lufthansa and took over the personnel recruiting department. He was a personal assistant to the CEO and Chairman of Lufthansa from 1995 prior to assuming responsibility for Lufthansa’s regional partnerships in Europe in 1998.In 2000, he became Vice President Alliances & Cooperations with responsibility for managing and coordinating Lufthansa’s partners worldwide, including the Star Alliance and regional partners. Additionally, in 2003, he assumed responsibility for Lufthansa’s passenger business strategy and airline holdings. In October 2004, Carsten Spohr was appointed to the Management Board of Lufthansa Passenger Airlines. In this capacity, he was responsible for hub management, cabin crews and human resources at Lufthansa Passenger Airlines.

Carsten Spohr was appointed CEO and Chairman of the Executive Board of Lufthansa Cargo with effect from January 15, 2007. On January 1, 2011, he became a Member of the Executive Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG and CEO of Lufthansa German Airlines. Since May 1, 2014, Carsten Spohr has been Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO of Deutsche Lufthansa AG.

Carsten Spohr holds a Lufthansa captain’s license for the aircraft of the Airbus A320 family. He is married and has two daughters.
